C205: the C63 Coupé's body and rear axle

Hong Kong's C-Class Coupé rollout, and the body panels, wider wheel arches and bespoke rear axle that separate the original C 63 from an AMG-styled four-cylinder.

C205 is the fixed-roof, two-door C-Class Coupé. The same 205 family includes the W205 four-door saloon, S205 estate and A205 cabriolet. A C 250 Coupé and a Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupé can therefore both be C205s, despite their very different engines and bodywork. Sources

The original C 63 shared only three kinds of outer panel

The pre-facelift C 63 and C 63 S Coupé shared only the doors, roof and boot lid with the regular Mercedes-Benz coupé. Their redesigned front end, rear assembly and side panels accommodated the V8 installation and wider chassis. This was not a regular C-Class Coupé with different bumpers.

The flared arches made the AMG body 64 mm wider at the front and 66 mm wider at the rear than the regular coupé. These are body-width increases across the car at the respective ends—not extra width on each side and not track-width figures. The arches provided room for 255 mm front and 285 mm rear tyres. Reinforcement in key areas of the body structure handled the larger longitudinal and lateral loads transmitted by the powertrain and suspension. Sources

A separate rear-axle comparison: coupé versus saloon

Underneath, the C 63 Coupé received a newly developed multi-link rear axle and an AMG-specific rear-axle carrier. Mercedes-AMG placed the wheel-bearing contact surfaces 25 mm farther out than on the C 63 saloon. That comparison is with the AMG saloon, whereas the 64/66 mm figures compare AMG and regular coupé bodywork.

The wider carrier was accompanied by AMG-specific wheel carriers, stiffer elastokinematic tuning and more negative camber. Together, these changes controlled how the rear wheels were located and how their alignment responded to cornering loads; the wide stance was supported by different suspension hardware, not just wider-looking panels. Hong Kong: the sales names and dates

Mercedes-Benz announced the regular coupé internationally on 14 August 2015, with December 2015 commercial introduction stated in its European release. Hong Kong’s documented introduction followed in February 2016: Car1’s 11 February report announced a C 250 Coupé display at the Mercedes me Store in Central’s Entertainment Building on 15 February. Likewise, the HK$1,398,000 starting price in the April 2019 C 63 S report was for the saloon; the coupé’s own column gave HK$1,498,000. Sources

Frontbass: another use for the body structure

The original C205 international announcement also describes Frontbass: bass speakers use the enclosed volume of bodyshell crossmembers and side members as their resonance chamber. This is an acoustic use of structural space, separate from the optional Burmester sound-system name. See Frontbass: the body structure as a bass enclosure for the shared mechanism. Sources
