W166 ML / GLE: engineering

Ten W166 engineering details, from reversible belt tensioning and folding rear seats to low range, multi-spark ignition and plug-in hybrid systems, with Hong Kong ML/GLE history.

The W166 M-Class became the GLE at its facelift. The ordinary five-door SUV remained in the 166 generation; the GLE Coupé is C292, while the larger seven-seat GL / GLS is X166. Sources

Air springs, dampers and anti-roll bars

The original M-Class could combine AIRMATIC air suspension, ADS adaptive damping and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. They work on different parts of the suspension: air springs support and level the body; the dampers control suspension movement; active front and rear anti-roll bars counter body roll in bends. Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong described ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM as an option in April 2012, and a local ML 500 road test that month recorded a car equipped with it. Sources

See how ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM uses hydraulic roll control for the shared 166 mechanism.

Low range adds mechanical reduction

The Hong Kong ML 350 launch material already listed 4MATIC, 4ETS electronic traction control, an off-road button and Downhill Speed Regulation. The optional ON&OFFROAD package added a two-stage transfer case with reduction gearing, a centre differential lock and extended AIRMATIC functions. The basic off-road mode and the full package therefore describe different hardware configurations. Sources

The ON&OFFROAD explainer follows the separate jobs of low range, the front-to-rear differential lock and brake-based wheel-to-wheel traction control.

The plug-in hybrid can refrigerate with its engine stopped

The W166 GLE plug-in hybrid’s electric refrigerant compressor and electric heater are described in its 2016 North American manual. The high-voltage battery can power the compressor while the petrol engine is stopped, allowing cooling and dehumidification. This also supports cabin preconditioning before departure. Sources

Read the W166 section of engine-off climate control for the manual’s separate key-triggered, scheduled and short-stop operating modes.

An auxiliary pump helps the automatic work with stop/start

The Hong Kong ML 400 4MATIC arrival report in March 2014 linked its 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission’s compatibility with ECO stop/start to a separate pump operating according to demand. The pump is part of the transmission’s provision for stop-and-restart operation, while other revisions target losses when the drivetrain is running: the same account describes lower-friction components, lower-viscosity transmission fluid and a revised torque converter suited to low-load, low-speed operation. Sources

Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong’s earlier M-Class release likewise paired ECO stop/start with the revised converter, friction-optimised bearings and transmission-oil thermal management. Sources

The rear cushion moves before the backrest folds

The original W166’s rear seats create a level load area by moving both the cushions and the backrests. The manufacturer’s manual describes the cushion tipping upwards first, followed by the backrest folding forwards into its cargo position. Moving the cushion clears space for the backrest; the manual warns that reversing the sequence can damage it. The left and right backrests fold separately. Sources

Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong described the same cushion-and-backrest arrangement at the original M-Class introduction. It also listed adjustable rear-backrest angles for passengers, combining comfort adjustment and cargo conversion in the same seating layout. Sources

Active Parking Assist takes the steering task

The original-generation Active Parking Assist uses ultrasound to measure spaces beside the vehicle and steers it into a suitable parallel space. In the 2013 North American M-Class manual, the driver still operates the accelerator and brakes and selects D or R when prompted. PARKTRONIC provides distance warnings during the manoeuvre; Active Parking Assist adds steering intervention. Sources

The Canadian 2012 M-Class brochure offered PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist in its Premium Package. Sources

Two kinds of belt tensioning

The original M-Class’s PRE-SAFE electrically tightens the front seat belts when it recognises certain hazardous situations. If the danger passes without an accident, it releases that extra tension. Its electrically operated pretensioners are reversible and do not require replacement merely because they have activated. Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong listed PRE-SAFE in the original M-Class’s standard safety package. Sources

The manual distinguishes those electric actuators from the pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Devices used for accident restraint. Once a pyrotechnic device has fired, it must be replaced. The belt system therefore has both a reversible preparatory action and a separate one-use crash-restraint action. Sources

The plug-in hybrid releases tank pressure before refuelling

The facelift W166 GLE plug-in hybrid’s fuel-flap request starts a tank-pressure release sequence. In the 2016 North American manual, the switch indicator flashes while the instrument display says “Please Wait Depressurizing Tank”. Once pressure has been released and the filler is unlocked, the indication changes to “Tank is Depressurized Ready for Refueling”. The flap cannot be opened until pressure has been released. Sources

The petrol ML 350 uses multi-spark ignition

Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong’s original M-Class release identifies multi-spark ignition in the petrol ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY alongside its piezo direct injection. The two functions act on different parts of combustion: the injectors meter fuel, while the ignition coil can recharge before fully discharging to produce another spark in the same ignition cycle. Sources

The heated and cooled cupholder has a key restriction

The available temperature-controlled front cupholder in the original North American M-Class manual keeps cold drinks cool and warm drinks warm. Blue and red indicators identify its modes. In heating mode, its metal insert heats up, with a residual-heat lamp warning when the insert is hot. Sources

The same manual gives a specific restriction: do not leave the KEYLESS-GO key in this cupholder, because it will not be recognised there. Sources

Hong Kong: from ML to GLE

Date Documented local milestone Sources
April 2012 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong’s 13 April release said the new M-Class was available locally and named the petrol ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY. A 30 April local test documented the ML 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, a 4.7-litre V8 press car priced at HK$1,048,000.
March 2014 A 23 March arrival report introduced the ML 400 4MATIC, with a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 and 7G-TRONIC PLUS, at HK$799,000.
June 2015 Local reporting on 20 June documented the facelift GLE presentation and IFC display. Prices followed on 30 June: GLE 400, GLE 500 and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 were listed in the ordinary-SUV table. The first two used 7G-TRONIC PLUS; the AMG used AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC.
November 2016 price record A Hong Kong GLE 500 e plug-in hybrid listing was updated on 23 November, at HK$1,099,000. Its local introduction month remains unconfirmed.
